You will never learn the techniques if you were keep hitting Uchidachi as you like in Jodo. Obviously it’s important for beginners to learn the shapes of Kata first but, you should remember that Uchidachi has a sharp sword and going to cut you if there were chances.
Sometimes you notice that your techniques works fine with your friends but doesn’t work if Sensei was your Uchidachi. Kuritsuke for example, you ended up being cut on your neck, hip and legs. Then you start thinking why and hopefully try improving your skills.
Although, this is quite difficult if Uchidachi wasn’t high-grade because it will be just playing around and you never understand anything. So I won’t recommend anyone to just start cutting everyone at their own pleasure.
But you can always think about “can Uchidachi cut now?” while training. And I believe this help understanding if the techniques work or not.
Just like Iaido. You must think if you are ready to strike before you strike. There are many questions how Uchidachi will cut you or counter attacks. What if the technique didn’t work? How do I make the technique work to stop that happening? There are Sen-no-Sen etc… theories in Budo but I heard both Iaido and Jodo are Go-no-Sen. Is it true?
I was thinking exactly the same as Ed so I totally understand him but he thought Uchidachi has Seichusen in Tachiotoshi. Therefor Shi-Jo must step side and step in to strike. But Uchidachi has Shinken and if he ever have a sec to take the Seichusen, we are dead. Why Uchidachi is standing there if he had Seichusen? He won’t be standing there if he could cut you. That’s why Shi-Jo must keep winning Seichusen and have correct Maai so that Uchidachi cannot do anything they really want to do.
You could Gyakuteuchi and blow Tachi away if Uchidachi stepped in without taken Seichusen. But if you were just standing there too long, Uchidachi could smack Jo-saki with Tsuba like in Hissage to cut your head (Shoji sensei demonstrated this technique to cut me from Awase at BKA 2015 Summer Koryu Jodo seminar) or, give him a chance to win Seichusen perhaps.
Therefor, Shi-Jo must not show any Suki, step in where Uchidachi can’t reach and strike from where he can’t attack. This Shi-Jo’s movements must be so sudden or never work, right?
Is Tachiotoshi Sen-no-Sen? I’ve read Awase is actually showing the moment “winning with Ju-monji technique” which is Go-no-Sen so, maybe start with Go-no-Sen but the first strike is Sen-no-Sen? It’s quite confusing.
By the way, Hissage and Tachiotoshi has Gyakute Awase but the way Jo and sword meet differently. I wasn’t sure if you can actually stop Uchidachi like that. Why Uchidachi stop? Why doesn’t cut me? and what do I need to do to stop him if he wanted to cut me? What’s Uchidachi thinking? I never really had any questions before visiting the dojo in Hokkaido. I guess I wasn’t thinking anything so I never had. I just did what I’ve been told. Aim here and hit there.
PS. Hissage Kage explains a little more. Watch Fukuoka style Koryu Jo from 1m55s.
Ishido sensei’s “do you really think you can cut like that?” sounds like telling Kasoteki and Uchidachi to cut you whenever they can.
How about in Seitei Mae? People say to me to have Seme from Kissaki after Nukitsuke but can’t Kasoteki draw and cut my wrist or something even leaning back? I’ve seen Jushin Ryu which make sword to vertical position before Furikaburi which make sense to me. Whatever the reason there might be, I’m pretty sure I won’t have any breaks during Nukitsuke to Kirioroshi, and the timing must be so difficult. I’m sure doing everything very fast isn’t the only thing you have to do here but Ishido sensei’s Mae is pretty amazing.
I must stop thinking about how I draw a sword and strike Jo, and start think about my enemies more carefully or won’t develop my skills. How will I cut myself if I was my enemy?
It’s like playing Shogi.
